Television, video, and motion picture camera operators produce images that tell a story, inform, entertain an audience, or record an event. Making of commercial quality movies and video programs requires technical expertise and creativity. Producing successful images requires choosing and presenting interesting material, selecting appropriate equipment and applying a good eye and steady hand to assure smooth natural movement of the camera.

Technical expertise, a “good eye”, imagination and creativity are essential.

Cinematographers need good eyesight, artistic ability, and hand-eye coordination. They should be patient, accurate, and detail-oriented. They also should have good communication skills, and, if needed, the ability to hold a camera by hand for extended periods. Cinematographers who operate their own businesses, or freelance, need business skills as well as talent. One-fourth of camera operators are self-employed. Some self-employed Cinematographers, contract with television networks, documentary or independent filmmakers, advertising agencies, trade shows or convention sponsors to do individual projects for a predetermined fee, often at a daily rate. Most salaried Cinematographers are employed by television broadcasting stations or motion picture studios & production houses. Half of the salaried film and video editors work for motion picture studios & production houses.

Cinematographers in entry-level jobs learn to set up lights, camera, and other equipment. They may receive routine assignments requiring camera adjustments or decisions on what subject matter to capture. Cinematographers in the film and television industries usually are hired for a project based on recommendations from individuals such as producers, directors of photography, and camera assistants from previous projects, or through interviews with the producer. ENG and studio camera operators who work for television affiliates usually start in small markets to gain experience.

Employment of Cinematographers is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2010. Rapid expansion of the entertainment market, especially motion picture production and distribution, will spur growth for camera operators. In addition, computer and Internet services provide new outlets for interactive productions. Cinematographers will be needed to film made-for-the Internet broadcasts such as live music videos, digital movies, sports, and general information or entertainment programming. These images can be delivered directly into the home either on compact discs or over the Internet.

Cinematographers, have a bright future in years to come. They can expect to earn a few thousand to a seven figure amount for a film. Digital Academy – The Film School could be your best bet to learn this great art of controlling light, shadow and forms etc.
